Abstract:

Heinrich Faber's (born around 1500, died 1552) Compendiolum musicae, a musical elemental textbook, which was first printed in 1548, was one of the most used textbooks on grammar schools in the 16th and 17th century. It was reprinted more than 40 times; in addition adaptions and translations had been published.
In the translation by Christoff Rid, which appeared in 1572, the German text is quite near to the original Latin text. However, there have been made some changes and refinements in the text and more precise presentations in the music examples. Above all, Rid replaced the examples from the music literature. The paper will discuss these modifications and will ask how to interpret these changes.
